If you're considering a detox, you might not know what is right
for you. In fact, there are many confusing options out there. This
is good news, too, however, because it also means that you can
choose the right one for you. You can also just simply customize
your own detox program so that it works best for your body.
You can choose from a homemade detox system or a combination of
homemade and commercial detox programs, as well as simply going
commercial altogether. The premade plans function in different ways,
but most include some sort of dietary plan, such as restricting food
intake and perhaps avoiding it all together, as well as possible
supplementation with herbs or other substances.
Following are some examples of popular detoxification plans:
• Water fasting
• Juice fasting
• Eating very little or limiting food intake to "clean" foods, such
as fruit
• Herbal detox
• Detox baths, either with water alone or with certain substances or
minerals included
• Colon cleansing
• Restricting calories
Before you begin a detox, it's a good idea to do your research and
decide which program is best for you, or consult with your
physician. You can also simply customize your own plan, as
previously stated.
When you first begin to detox, it's helpful to limit your detox time
so that you can get used to it. Your body will also need time to
adjust, in addition to the psychological factors, such as not being
able to eat for 24 hours, that you’ll need to adjust to. You might
want to limit your first detox to 24 hours, just to get the hang of
it. After that, a three-day detox, which would usually begin on
Friday and go throughout a weekend or other time off of work, is
usually helpful. This is because you can take the time to focus on
the detox without having to significantly modify your life in other
ways. It also is helpful because you're not distracted with work or
some other such function when you are trying to detox, which can be
uncomfortable in its early stages.
As you become more experienced, you can detox for longer periods of
time, and some people do it for as much as 10 days or even a month.
It all depends on what works best for you.
Detoxification can also include body massage, skin brushing or other
external stimulation, as well as journaling, meditation and other
"internal" methods of cleansing for your mind and psyche.
Some of the most popular detox programs do not have you fasting
entirely, but rather, you drink diluted juices or other liquids to
get a small amount of calories so that you are not simply doing
"cold turkey" fasting. Some fasting programs also allow you to eat
fruit or other easily digestible foods that do not require
significant digestion, so that your body's processes are focused on
the detox.
You may even have heard of Stanley Burroughs and his popular
"lemonade diet," or the "Hawaiian colon cleanser." All of these
diets can be researched online and many have books or systems you
can purchase as well. Whatever you choose, a little time on homework
will help you find the right one for you.
