While some societies pay reverence to older people who wear their
wrinkles as well earned badges of honor, this is not the case in
most modern cultures. Most people in these societies are on a quest
to find eternal youth which includes an effective treatment for
wrinkles. While there are a number of procedures available to
eliminate these unsightly lines and creases, the most effective one
is a surgical face lift.
Pre-surgery Decisions
The first decision that you will need to make before undergoing a
face lift as a treatment for wrinkles is the type of anesthetic that
you want. There are two types-general and intravenous. You can
discuss with your doctor the best anesthetic for your circumstances.
Another decision that you will need to make deals with the use of
other cosmetic procedures that can serve to enhance your face lift
to give you the best results possible. Your doctor may suggest the
use of facial implants to lift and support specific areas of your
face, such as your cheekbones. He may also want to perform some soft
tissue augmentation to shape and change the contour of your face.
Injections such as collagen or Botox can also aid in the removal of
wrinkles and lines on the surface.
When discussing the use of these procedures when having your face
lift, you should be sure that you are aware of the risks that are
involved with each of them.
The Surgery
The face lift itself will involve the doctor making an incision
in your hairline. He will cut along the hairline in a path that
travels around the upper half of your head. He then pulls the skin
down to give himself easy access to the tissue that lies underneath.
Once the tissue is exposed, the doctor will then begin to rebuild
and strengthen this tissue layer. He may use any other cosmetic
procedures that you have agreed upon at this stage.
Upon completing this tissue work, the doctor will then begin the
steps to reconnect your skin. He will pull the skin tightly back to
your hairline, trimming away any excess that is unnecessary. He will
then reattach the skin to its original position with sutures.
Recovery
The skin in the treated area will remain bruised and swollen for
several days. The incision will leave a scar, although due to its
position in your hairline it should not be visible. After several
weeks, you should look younger than you have in years.
While a surgical face lift is the most effective treatment for
wrinkles, it is not the only option. You should discuss with your
doctor if a face lift is right for you.
