As we grow older, the first place that we seem to notice wrinkles
is on our face. Where do these facial wrinkles come from? There are
a variety of causes for these age lines and creases that seemed to
have been left across your face.
Genetics
Some facial wrinkles are a result of intrinsic, or internal
factors. Some people seem to age much faster than others. These
visible signs of aging can be determined by genetic factors. This
explains the reason why some people have facial wrinkles in their
thirties while others still have smooth skin into their fifties.
Sun Exposure
One of the many external (extrinsic) causes of facial wrinkles is
overexposure to ultraviolet rays that are present in sunlight and
tanning beds. These rays stimulate the production of melanin which
causes the skin to tan. Unfortunately, this production can also
cause the skin to loosen and sag. This loss of elasticity can lead
to the formation of wrinkles.
To prevent further damage to your skin, you should avoid tanning
completely and limit the amount of time that you spend in the sun.
If you do need to be outside for extended periods of time, you
should apply ample amounts of sun protective products.
Alcohol and Cigarettes
Alcohol and cigarettes are also external factors that can lead to
facial wrinkles. Excessive amounts of alcohol can lead to the
dehydration of your skin cells, causing your skin to lose its
ability to naturally moisturize itself. Dry skin is more vulnerable
to damage that can lead to wrinkles.
Nicotine is a byproduct of cigarettes that lowers the level of
oxygen in your blood stream. This can lead to poor circulation in
the skin and can cause the cells to lose elastin and collagen,
causing to sag and loosen.
You should limit your alcohol intake and quit smoking to prevent
more facial wrinkles from forming.
Better Skin Health
These factors can all cause the formation of facial wrinkles.
While there is not much to be done about the genetic factors, you
can promote better skin health by eliminating the external causes
for your skin to wrinkle.
