One area of the face the usually has the most severe wrinkles is the
eyes. The most common of these wrinkles are the formation of several
of these lines and creases that are known as crow’s feet. This
formation fans out from the corner of the eyes and can extend to the
hairline. These wrinkles can be the deepest and most apparent on
your face. Crow’s feet and other wrinkles associated with the eyes
are common due to the fact that the skin around the eyes is the
thinnest on the body. This area also contains no oil glands which
results in the skin becoming easily dried out and more vulnerable to
damage.
As we age, this skin becomes even thinner and decreases its
production of collagen and elastin, the two key components that are
necessary to maintain the skin’s firmness and tone. The skin begins
to sag, which creates the lines, wrinkles, dark circles, and bags
under the eyes that are often noticeable in older individuals.
Crow’s feet are often caused by repetitive facial expressions
(such as laughing) as well as squinting.
Overexposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun or a tanning bed
can also cause the formation of these wrinkles.
Smokers also tend to have crow’s feet more often than non smokers
due to a lower amount of oxygen in the bloodstream that creates poor
circulation to the skin cells. Another reason that smokers are
afflicted with this condition more often than other individuals is
the fact that smokers tend to squint more due to the smoke in the
air around them as well a dryness that is present in the eyes
themselves.
There are several treatment options available to diminish the
appearance of crow’s feet. Cosmetic procedures such as face lifts
and injection programs can effectively smooth out these problem
areas.
There are also numerous over-the-counter products that can
tighten and lift the skin and diminish these wrinkles. You can
discuss with your physician the various treatment options to decide
the one that is best for you.
