As a person starts to become older, one of the first signs of the
aging process is the development of wrinkles. These lines and
creases usually appear on the face, neck, and hands. The causes of
wrinkles can be associated with the two types of aging-intrinsic and
extrinsic.
The intrinsic type of aging is associated with the internal
factors that are some of the causes of wrinkles. Genetics plays an
important part in the development of wrinkles. These genetic factors
explain the reason that some people do not seem to develop serious
wrinkles well into old age while other individuals have visible
wrinkles in their thirties.
Other intrinsic factors that are causes of wrinkles are hormonal
imbalances. Many women claim to notice the appearance of more
wrinkles during and after menopause. The formation of these lines
and creases is due to the lower levels of estrogen that are present
in these women.
Extrinsic aging is the aging process that is caused by external
factors. One of the leading causes of wrinkles is the skin’s
overexposure to ultraviolet rays, such as those that are found in
sunlight as well as tanning beds. These rays cause the skin to
become damaged and it may begin to lose the ability to heal itself.
A decrease in the production of elastin and collagen can also be the
result of this damage. To eliminate the development of wrinkles, you
should avoid spending an excessive amount of time in the sun. You
should also avoid tanning completely. If you are going to be
outside, you should always use sun block or some other ultraviolet
protection product.
Another extrinsic factor that can cause wrinkles is cigarette
smoking. Due to lower levels of oxygen in a smoker’s bloodstream,
this individual’s skin has poor circulation which can cause it to
lose collagen and elastin as well as its natural ability to
moisturize itself. If you are a smoker, you should quit immediately
to ensure that your oxygen levels in your blood are adequate to
maintain your skin’s health.
These elements are the main causes of wrinkles.
Although there are some of these factors that you are powerless
to prevent, there are others that you can eliminate to promote more
healthy and youthful looking skin.
