Whether you have spent years worshipping the sun, spending hours
soaking up its rays, or have just been exposed to the every day wear
and tear the sun’s UV rays inflict on your skin, you are bound to
discover age spots appearing on your skin as you grow older. Age
spots, or liver spots as they are sometimes called, are flat spots
found on sun exposed skin, particularly the hands, face, shoulders,
arms, and forehead. There are many treatments available to lighten
or eliminate these unsightly markings of age – ranging from natural
remedies to a more deep penetrating cleansing such as a chemical
peel.
Some people may find age spots starting to appear on their skin
when they reach their late thirties or early forties. Others do not
have to worry about them until they reach their fifties. If your age
spots are a fairly light brown in color instead of black, you should
be able to clear up your spots with the aid of a natural remedy or
cream. The following is a list of treatments you can use to help
clear up your undesirable spots and gain a more youthful looking
appearance.
Natural Remedies
Using a mixture of horseradish, vinegar, lemon juice and rosemary
oil, you can create your own solution that will help exfoliate the
top layer of your skin. All you need to do is dab it on your spots
once or twice a day and stop the daily procedure when you see your
spots have lightened.
Exfoliants such as Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), beta hydroxy acid (BHA),
and Tretinoin (known as Retin-A and Renova ) are key ingredients in
moisturizers, toners and astringents which when used cause upper
skin to shed and reduce discoloration over time. These can leave
your skin red and irritated for some time after using. Using
sunscreen and taking a multi-vitamin which contains the free radical
fighting antioxidant vitamins C and E will help you protect yourself
from further harm.
If your age spots are darker, you may want a solution that will
work faster and more effectively. The other options available to you
are laser and light based treatments and chemical peels. The most
popular chemical peel is known as the “TCA” peel. The best laser
option uses the Medite C6 laser. The Palomar RejuveLux System is a
pulsed light system that eliminates age spots by delivering a pulse
of intense light that is absorbed by the pigment in the age spot.
The Solar Genesis skin therapy system and StarLux system reduce
appearances of age spots.
It is advisable to consult with your doctor before beginning any
treatment. Your doctor or dermatologist will be able to inform you
of any allergy concerns or side affects that could occur, although
for this procedure the risks are minimal as it does not include
surgery.
