Health and the Senior - Keeping Healthy - Keeping Fit

Loneliness can also become a health problem for seniors. Studies have shown that older people with a varied social life are less susceptible to germs. Being with others can have life lengthening and health promoting effects. Positive relationships with others can strengthen your immune system and provide a means of releasing stress. When people are lonely, they are more likely to neglect their health. Even if your social contacts are few, if you feel loved and cared for by them, it will have positive effects on your health. Even having a pet or plants to take care of can prolong your life.

Being happily married can have the most health benefits. If you are in a happy relationship, it’s as good for your health as is getting exercise and eating a proper diet. Of course, if you are in an unhappy relationship, that can be very detrimental to your health. In that case, divorce may improve your health, but only if there were serious marital problems. Studies have shown that unmarried people have higher death rates, higher stress levels, and a higher use of health services than do married people.

Not everyone has the option of being in a happy married life. Especially as seniors, we often lose loved ones and have no choice but to be alone. However, being alone doesn’t have to mean being lonely. Everyone needs someone to confide in and feel comfortable with. Studies have shown that even having a pet that loves and needs you can do wonders for your health.

Belonging to a group, club, or church is also healing and helpful since it provides positive social interaction and a sense of community. Connecting with other people isn’t always easy. Often it means forgiving others, which in turn is healing to those who forgive. You need to be real and honest with people. Not in a complaining or critical way, but by stating how you feel about things. The best way is to really care about other people and really listen to what they have to say, instead of thinking about what you’re going to say next.

A big health aid for the senior adult is to become a volunteer. A major study found that people who never did volunteer work usually died younger than those who volunteered at least once a week. So turn off the television and get out of the house for awhile. Someone out there needs you!
