Elderly and Health - Keeping Healthy as You Get Older

As we age, there are a myriad of changes constantly taking place in our bodies. And although the effects of aging on the mind and body are eventually inevitable, there are numerous ways to slow down or thwart the process so that we can live the best quality of life possible.

There are many ways available to maintain good health as you age. It's been a common misconception that the older you are, the less exercise your body needs. Nothing could be further from the truth and regular exercise has been shown to reduce a number of unhealthy conditions with everything from obesity to depression for senior citizens. A successful program incorporating exercise into your daily lifestyle is an important part of seniors and health care.

Equally as important as the physical aspect, a positive state of mental well-being is being recognized as being just as important for older people and health care. Depression is a common condition experienced by the elderly and is a major concern that affects quality of life as well as activities of daily living such as bathing and grooming. An senior suffering from depression will often show signs of decline in other areas as well, such as an overall deterioration of their condition or prior progress made after an illness or injury.

One of the main obstacles many seniors must face as they grow older is a loss of independence and or mobility. Few things can cause a person to feel more helpless or unable to control their own fate than being unable to move about freely or having to rely on someone else for the basic necessities. Being sensitive to their needs and seeing the world through their eyes, whether it be from a wheelchair, from behind a walker or confined to a bed, will make life easier on both parties.

Ensuring that an older person is able to retain at least some sort of independence is critical for their mental status as well as for controlling the amount of decline they experience. Allowing a person to have a say and an active role in their care for as long as possible will give them the ability to retain a sense of control. Finding out their last wishes or advance directives is an extremely important aspect and should not be overlooked.

Another challenge we are faced with as we grow older is the loss of strength, balance and bone density which leaves us susceptible to fractures and less likely to recover from even a minor fall. For this reason it's crucial for the elderly to live in a safe, healthy environment that has been assessed expressly for their individual needs.

As our vision and hearing decline as well, it's imperative to make modifications so that the safety or quality of life is not compromised. Installing the proper alarms and equipment as well as faithfully following a few precautions will provide a safe, happy environment.
