Aging Skin Care - Maintain a Youthful Appearance

Our skin is one of the very first parts of our bodies to show our age. Although the changes our skin goes through as we get older are mostly inevitable, there are measures we can take to reduce the effects of aging by a making a few sensible choices and taking regular care of our skin.

Good skin care can be summed up rather simply; thorough cleansing, faithful use of moisturizers and proper protection. These simple actions are all that is necessary to keep our skin looking as young and healthy for as long as possible.

In order to minimize the effects of aging on the skin, we must first protect it from harmful forms of exposure such as harsh chemicals, environmental pollutions or UV rays.

Wearing sunscreen regardless of the weather or time of year is essential for minimizing wrinkles, reducing the risk of skin cancer and for healthy skin in general.

Technology has made numerous advances in the world of skin care for senior citizens. There are many different types of skin care treatments available today. In order to choose the best regimen for you, you must first assess your skin and its needs. Determine what type you actually have; is it dry, oily or maybe a combination of both? Keep in mind that the texture and capacity of our skin to retain moisture diminishes as we get older, so skin that was once oily may now in fact be dry.

Here are some skin care methods and treatments that can help you minimize the effects of aging on the skin.

  • Exfoliants: After reaching the age of about 30, our skins ability to regenerate itself decreases. Therefore it's necessary to use one of the many exfoliants that are available to ensure your skin rejuvenates itself as smoothly and evenly as possible. Our skin naturally replenishes itself every month or so depending on our age and other environmental factors. Regular exfoliation will help create a continual production of healthy cells.

  • Anti-aging wrinkle creams: This is probably the most common method of aging skin care. There are several anti-wrinkle creams to choose from that are armed with powerful anti-oxidants to help prevent premature aging and wrinkling for seniors.

  • Anti-oxidants: By eating foods high in anti-oxidants and or the regular use of vitamins, you can actually help your skin fight the free radicals that often cause the aging or death of healthy skin cells.

  • Anti-aging moisturizers and sunscreens: Regular use of these two products is critical in any successful aging skin care regimen. These products will deeply penetrate the skin, keeping it better hydrated and help lessen the visible signs of aging such as sun spots and fine lines.
