Being diagnosed as having diabetes is never a good thing, but it
is much better today than it was 50 years ago, or even 15 years ago.
Today you have a wealth of information to explore and there is no
better defense against disease than knowledge. In the past diabetics
had to rely on pamphlets and encyclopedias and the occasional book
found on the library shelf. Today you can log into the internet,
type in www.diabetes, add dot.com or dot.org and you can spend hours
learning about the disease.
No matter which diabetes sites you visit, no doubt you will be
able to find the information you are looking for. Most of the sites
are broken down into categories that start with a description of the
disease and proceed to cover any topic related to it. The site at
www.diabetes.com was developed by a pharmaceutical company and in
addition to general information about diabetes, it has self-quizzes,
meal planners and articles to inspire and motivate.
The American Diabetes Association runs the www.diabetes.org site.
It is loaded with information starting with an explanation of what
diabetes is and how it is treated. There is a lot of information on
where to turn for help, both locally and nationally. Other
information on this site includes exercise and diet routines and
suggestions, how to handle your diabetes in the workplace, dealing
with a diabetic child and there are message boards to ask questions
to be answered by professionals or by someone who has been there.
The worst part about being sick or finding out you have a disease
is not knowing what happens next. Although your doctor or other
health care professional should be your first option, sometimes
you’d like to know something right now, and right now happens to be
3 a.m. With www.diabetes, you can find answers to your questions
and, if you need it, a shoulder to cry on, too.
