There are 3 major types of diabetes: type 1, which used to be
known as juvenile diabetes or early onset, type two diabetes and
gestational diabetes. Type Two diabetes is the most common and
although it is serious, it need not be a life sentence. With diet
and exercise and a proper treatment plan, it is possible to live a
normal life and avoid any complications.
Type two diabetes means your body doesn’t produce adequate
amounts of insulin or your cells are not able to process the insulin
your pancreas does provide. In healthy individuals, the body uses
the energy that is produced from the food you eat. This energy is
used in the form of glucose, or blood sugar. Insulin allows the
cells to process the glucose. With diabetes, this doesn’t happen.
Once you are diagnosed with type two diabetes, it is time to take
charge of your health. The first step is usually requires weight
loss and the addition of exercise to your daily routine. You do not
want to try to drop a lot of weight quickly; slow and steady wins
this race. Have your doctor set up an appointment for you with a
dietician or diabetes nutritionist to start you on a diabetes
treatment plan. You can start using the diabetic food pyramid right
away to plan your meals and set up your eating schedule. You’ll also
want to start some type of exercise plan.
The most important thing is to be informed. Do your research and
know what to expect and what the side effects are. Then do your best
to keep those complications from arising.
Although you do have to start eating differently, you do not have
to give up sugar, alcohol or sweets altogether. By watching what you
eat on a daily basis, you can eat foods from the top of the pyramid
occasionally. With diet, regularly scheduled meals and sacks and
exercise, you can manage your diabetes instead of being a slave to
it.
