Most people who are diagnosed with diabetes want to do everything
they can to avoid having to take oral medications or start insulin
injections. They follow their doctors’ advice and visit a dietician
who helps them develop a new healthy eating plan. They add exercise
to their daily routines and may even start self glucose monitoring
to watch their own progress. But there are those who may want to do
even more and they will do some research to see if there are any
vitamins or supplements that will cure their diabetes.
Unfortunately there is not a miracle supplement that will do that
any more than there is a supplement that will make you lose weight.
However, there has been some evidence to show that there are some
dietetic supplements that may help you lower your blood pressure,
decrease insulin resistance, help to process sugar more efficiently
and ease symptoms and complications of diabetes.
The most common of these supplements is something you probably
have in your pantry right now. Cinnamon may increase insulin’s
ability to process sugar and decrease fasting blood sugar,
triglycerides and cholesterol levels. Omega-3 fatty acids have been
shown to decrease triglyceride levels, too.
Chromium picolinate is thought to lower blood sugar levels,
improve the efficiency of insulin and ease the symptoms of diabetes.
It has been suggested that all adults take this supplement every day
to prevent the onset of diabetes.
One herb, salacia oblonga is actually used in India to treat
diabetes and is available on some internet sites. As is true with
any vitamins or supplements, though, check with your doctor or
health care professional before adding them to your daily regimen.
Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant taken to improve blood glucose
levels and help to prevent and reduce the severity of diabetic
neuropathy and vision problems.
There are diabetic supplements offered that may help with the
symptoms, causes and complications of diabetes. There is very
little, if any, scientific evidence to back up most of the claims,
but if you consult with your doctor and she agrees with your
decision to try one or all of them, you may find one that it works
for you.
