There are more than one foundations dedicated to the goal of
finding a cure for diabetes. Many of these foundations are set up
locally and benefit people in their respective vicinities who are
dealing with the daily trials of living with diabetes. These
diabetes foundations are started by individuals or families who have
been touched by the disease and want to find a way to eradicate it.
A diabetes foundation is set up as non-profit organization and
they try to keep their overhead as low as possible. Their goal is to
raise money for research to find a cure for diabetes and they do
this by sponsoring marathons and races, soliciting donations and
throwing charity events. Some of the foundations use the donations
they receive to support people with diabetes and their families.
They offer scholarships for diabetes education and help people with
diabetes meet their financial obligations.
There are summer camps especially for kids with diabetes; a place
where they are normal, not different. The camps are owned and
operated by these foundations and the children can attend for free.
They can do all of the things that other kids do at camp and be
completely safe. This type of camp is a break for the kids and, in
effect, a break for the whole family.
Since the most important goal of most of these foundations is
finding a cure, they do all they can to assist the researchers who
are trying to achieve that goal. They find volunteers to participate
in clinical trials and provide funds to medical schools and other
research facilities for staff and patients.
The many diabetes foundations provide education and research
grants throughout the country and the benefits are felt throughout
the world. By soliciting funds and sponsoring money-raising events,
they raise the hope that a cure will soon be found for all forms of
diabetes.
